Pure CSS Image Rollovers

Home > HTML > CSS
In this tutorial you will learn how to transform an ordinary link into a button with image rollovers using nothing but css. Normally image rollovers involve replacing one image with another, when the mouse is moved over the button. This causes a problem because the new image has need to be loaded when the mouse is moved over the button. The delay between the time the mouse is moved over the button and when the image is loaded results in a flicker. The traditional method of solving this is to preload all the images using bulky javascript. A better solution is available through css, it involes putting all three states of a button (normal, hover, hit) on one image, and then simply moving the image around.

That is why it is better to create an external CSS file if you have not done so. This tutorial will show you how to convert your internal CSS styles to an external file and how to attach them to a page.

Adding Generated Content in CSS2

Home > HTML > CSS
It's a natural step in the development of CSS- the ability to use CSS to dynamically insert content onto the page that's part of an element's style. For example, a bullet image alongside a link to draw attention to the link can be considered a "styling content", since the image serves no purpose other than to dress up the link. So it makes sense to have CSS at least be able to insert this content (in this case, a bullet image) should you choose to. Well, starting in CSS2, support for Generated Content is here! Note that currently only Firefox 1.0+ and Opera 7.5+ support this feature, while IE 6 doesn't. Well, at least no surprises. So fire up the former browsers if you wish to see some of the live examples (others are simulated).
