Filling the Gaps

Home > ASP > Form Processing
In this final installment of ASP Form Handling, Chris Assenza discusses such topics as handling radio buttons and check boxes, emailing attachments with CDONTS, and some ways of using the data stored in the registration database we created last month. This month's article marks the end of our discussion of ASP Form Handling. Hopefully you have fully understood everything we have done thus far (and if you are new to this series, welcome aboard, check out the first article). In this article, we are going to cover a number of miscellaneous topics related to all the techniques discussed in previous articles. Some of these topics come straight from questions I received via email (thanks readers) and include: handling radio buttons and check boxes, emailing attachments with CDONTS, sending HTML in an email message, and some ways of using the data stored in the registration database we created last month. Let's start on the next page by revisiting Form Handling techniques.

Checkbox form elements

Home > ASP > Form Processing
By default, an HTML checkbox element returns nothing if it wasn't checked and a value of "on" if it was. So by checking it's value we can determine if it was checked or not when the form was submitted. The No-Frills Checkbox was: Not Checked . If you don't like the fact that the checkbox returns the value of "on" it's really easy to change. Simply add a value parameter and assign to it what you'd like the value returned by the checkbox to be. The Checkbox With An Associated Value returned: .

ASP CAPTCHA with OWC

Home > ASP > Form Processing
The main idea of a Captcha test (completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart) is to prevent automated form submission. This project is a very short VB Script source code, which let's you generate gif, jpg or png images with text which most people can easily read and enter to a form field, but automated computer program cannot.

Request.Form and stack overflow error

Home > ASP > Form Processing
The ASP limit for FORM data processing (Request.Form) is about 100kB (sometimes 80k, sometimes 105k or similar). You will get the message above if you try to post more data to an ASP page. We can build our own function, which will read binary data from input (x-www-form-urlencoded data) and then we can split the data to fields and decode to text fields. This article contains ASP include, which does the form processing and decoding.

Sending E-Mail with ASP 3.0 and CDONTS

Home > ASP > Form Processing
Sending e-mail from a web page can be useful for a number of reasons. It doesnt reveal your email address for one, plus it means you can get the information that you want from users and all of this without the end user having to use an e-mail client, nor have an e-mail account or SMTP server to send through. ASP 3.0 provides a new set of objects, referred to as CDONTS, which stands for Collaboration data objects for NT server. They can be used in conjunction with an HTML form and some text fields to create a nice e-mail form for a website to use, for some sort of contact facility.

Home > ASP > Form Processing
There are quite a few good reasons to using self-referencing forms, among which are: Easier error handling. Easier file management (no need for separate, multiple files for a single form). More user friendly. Opens up new functionality. Cleaner logic. Pre-entered values

Home > ASP > Form Processing
All we want in return is for you to be happy with the form you build here and, perhaps, tell your friends. The form you build here for your site here is YOUR FORM. We require no obligatory acknowledgement whatsoever. If you wish to link to us that's fine, but it's your call!

Writing Smart Web-based Forms

Home > ASP > Form Processing
Forms are used frequently in dynamic web applications. As a consequence, almost all web programmers have to deal with form data validation at some point in their careers. The technique described in this article will help you help the user submit correct information. So, what's the technique? Building smart forms... well, smart validation, actually. You are validating your forms on the server side, aren't you? You don't want to validate only on the client side.

Basic form handling

Home > ASP > Form Processing
In this tutorial, we will look at how we can collect and begin to process data from submitted forms on your website. Forms are great for collecting and handling data on your website. But how can you use ASP to make the most of your forms? Most webhosts provide standard scripts for form handling, but to make your site truly dynamic, it will not be long before you want forms to do something more than the average generic script offers.
